The Cheam Board of Governors recently announced the appointment of William Phelps as the next Headmaster of Cheam School, starting Summer term 2022. Will is an experienced and innovative educationalist, who has worked in both senior and prep schools, covering co-ed and single sex education. He spent over ten years at Abingdon School, Oxford where he taught Theology and went onto become Senior House Master and Head of Boarding. He was appointed to his first headship at The British International School of New York in Manhattan in 2010 and is currently Headmaster of The Beacon School, the largest boys prep school in the country. Will’s ambition for Cheam and his focus on the children’s happiness and success, will continue to drive the school forward, enhancing our reputation as one of the leading prep schools in the country. At an exciting stage in Cheam’s evolution, Will’s energy, proven experience and passion for education will successfully blend our history of traditional values with modern innovation. Will comes from an academic family based in Oxford and is well-known and highly regarded on the educational circuit. He has three teenage children, Milly, Tom and Ava, who are currently at university and Marlborough College.
