Leadership Talk | Caroline Haughey | Cheam School

It’s not often that pupils want to stay beyond the 6 o’clock bell, but several stayed behind to get some extra information out of Caroline Haughey, the King’s Councillor who graciously gave a presentation to the senior pupils on Thursday. The children were rapt for almost an hour by the presentation, which outlined Caroline’s challenges and inspirations to become a barrister, details of cases she has defended and all she has learnt on her journey to becoming such a highly regarded professional.

Caroline shared some details of her trials and in one case, walked the group through the steps she undertook to successfully defend her client, who had been involved in but wrongly accused of murder. She also spoke about some gang behaviour and a modern-day case of human slavery that is continuing. The reality of some of these cases kept pupils enthralled. She had everyone on the edge of their seats with props, visuals, videos and a really articulate presentation on the life of a barrister. There was something for everyone, even for the rugby fans who learnt that Caroline mentors several famous rugby stars on managing their on-screen presence!

This was a hugely captivating and inspiring presentation and a great addition to our Leadership Academy Talks initiative. Many thanks, Caroline Haughey!
