Meet Cara Long, Head of Drama

Drama plays an integral part of life at Cheam. The Drama department is happy, innovative and exciting, offering a wide variety of opportunities for performance throughout the year.

The main highlights of the Cheam calendar are: the Senior Play, the Junior Play and the Year 4 Nativity and there are many other chances to perform throughout the school year, with productions happening in all kinds of shapes and sizes on an almost weekly basis.

Productions are an important part of Cheam life and we encourage all students to participate in some way. Whether it’s on stage, behind the scenes making props, being a member of the technical team, stage crew, or doing hair and make-up, all Cheam students have the opportunity to shine.

At its core, the Drama curriculum has five principle aims: to boost confidence, to inspire creativity, to help with communication, to encourage collaboration and to promote respect for others.

Curricular Drama is taught from Years 3 to 6 over one double period a week. Skills acquired in the Drama Studio are those which allow children to adapt to the demands of a modern society.

Cheam’s Drama department collaborates with Newbury’s Watermill Theatre, West End actors, and professional make-up artists to provide a wide range of workshops to children in the Prep School.

LAMDA

Due to popular demand, LAMDA tuition is available at Cheam with weekly sessions. Every child who takes LAMDA lessons participates in a showcase each year, giving students an excellent opportunity to showcase their talents in front of a small audience.
